About Us
Who We Are
Heyl Town Band are based in the small town of Hayle in West Cornwall, which sits on the River Hayle near St Ives Bay. The band takes its name from the Cornish word for estuary, Heyl. Each year, community events, varied concerts, and nation-wide contests fill the bands busy schedule.
The appointment of Derek Johnson in 2000 marked the start of a successful era for Heyl. A contest record that included 23 wins over the course of 9 years, and a reputation as one of the most entertaining bands in Cornwall, saw the band break into the top 200 in the World of Brass rankings.
2013 has seen the band welcome a new Musical Director, Jeremy Meddows-Taylor. Previously a member of the Camborne, Tongwynlais and Cory Bands, Jeremy has returned to Cornwall following his graduation from Cardiff University with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree. This year, Heyl Town Band will also be marking its 40th Anniversary with a celebratory concert and a new Compact Disc recording.
What We Do
We play at private venues and we do concerts for people that request our services and for the community. In the summer we do concerts out and about where we collect for band funds. We also do a lot of contesting around the country. We do all of this to support ourselves, as it is quite an expensive activity to participate in. All the contests we go to we need to hire coaches for the day, and if it is far away then we need accommodation. This is on top of the cost of our instruments, music and insurance.
